When medical products molder Juno, Inc., ramped-up production for a new multi-component product, they needed a sophisticated injection molding machine that could be adapted to their specific needs. They also needed a supplier who could provide detailed technical support, on the phone if necessary. They got this, and much more, when they chose ENGEL.
ENGEL, a world leader in the design and manufacture of injection molding machines and part-handling automation systems, has installed an advanced 200 US ton injection molding machine equipped for multi-shot molding at Minnesota-based Juno, Inc. The new ENGEL victory combi system is being used for production of multi-component medical products at quantities of more than 10 million annually.
A contract manufacturer of plastic and metal components, Juno specializes in multi-component and micro-molding for medical applications. The company manufactures in white and clean room mini environments, and is certified for molding and assembly under ISO 13485 standards. In addition, Juno supplies the defense, aerospace, and various other industrial and consumer industries from two facilities in the Minneapolis area.
“We needed to expand our capabilities in multi-component molding, and so began an evaluation of about six machine manufacturers,” said Larry Johnson, Production Manager of Juno, Inc. “and ENGEL came out on top – offering everything we needed for our new operation.” Juno’s multi-component medical product involved an intricate spin stack tool and specialty molding in a white room operation. Production is planned for upwards of 10 million products annually.
The ENGEL victory combi injection molding machine is based on the tie bar-less clamping unit design first introduced to production in 1989. Tie bar-less clamping offers barrier-free access to the molding area, unrestricted use of the platen surface, and platen parallelism for exacting precision requirements. The minimal number of moving parts and excellent accessibility for cleaning of the clamping unit make victory an
excellent choice for white room and cleanroom operations.
“This victory combi system is in an extremely functional “L-shaped” configuration that places the injection units at a 90 degree angle to each other,” said Larry Davis of ENGEL. “This multi-injection design allows excellent access to the molding area. Engel's ability to supply the machine and configuration required, along with our proven service and support, gave Juno the reassurance they needed that they had partnered with the right company.”
“We are really pleased with Engel's support,” said Johnson. “They had the press we needed and were able to come in on budget and within the timeline we required. Also of great importance to us, they provide excellent technical support, especially over the phone.”
